CARBON ANODE SCRAP
Starburst Metals has operated successfully on a global basis in the energy, metals, and mineral ores markets since it was founded in 2013. During this time, we have gained invaluable experience and insight in an array of physical commodities sectors. This intellectual capital allows us to provide an unparallelled level of service for our customers.
Our core business is the global trading of waste or scrap carbon anode blocks/butts. Our in-depth knowledge of current market conditions, and a risk management approach, enables us to optimize the service we offer to our customers. We forge long-term relationships with our customers based on this expertise.
We offer a comprehensive solution to the demands of copper smelters fuel procurement. Our customers benefit from our commercial offerings as a result of our global reach and ethical, pragmatic approach.
Waste Carbon Anodes
Waste carbon anodes are also known as Carbon Anode Scrap or Carbon Anode Butts or Spent Anodes, or even Rejected Carbon Anodes. They are the residual material left over after the electrolytic process used to make primary aluminium from bauxite ore. The original carbon anode blocks are made from Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC) and Coal-Tar Pitch (CTP). The CPC is crushed and preheated, then it is mixed with the CTP to bind the material into carbon anode blocks. Prior to being fitted with electricity conducting rods, the anode blocks are heated to 1,100⁰ Celsius for approximately 17 days to enhance their strength and conductivity while they are in a cell or pot, in which they are gradually consumed during the electrolytic procedure.
Specifications
In contrast to foundry coke, our waste carbon anodes have a consistently high fixed carbon content of above 95%, which always have a corresponding Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of above 7,500 Kcal/kg. This means that our copper smelter customers benefit from higher energy levels from our carbon anode scrap compared to foundry coke, which traditionally has lower fixed carbon readings of 78-85%. The ash content of our material is no higher than 2%, so when this is combined with the above GCV levels, carbon anode scrap is a much more cost-effective fuel source than coke for smelting scrap metals.
When you consider the enhanced efficiency and lower price of our waste carbon anodes than that of coke, it will always be the fuel of choice for our customers.
Typical readings:
Fixed Carbon: 96.82%
Gross Calorific Value: 7857 Kcal/Kg
Ash: 1.62%
Volatile Matter: 1.38%
Sulphur: 2.13%
Typical sizes:
20-60 mm
200-500 mm
200-700 mm
We can also supply carbon anode powder, size 0-10 mm, plus unused green anode full size blocks.
We supply waste carbon anodes to our customers who are mainly based in Asia and Southeast Asia. We have close relationships with several primary aluminium producers and other partners from some countries in the Middle East, which enables us to procure large volumes of high-grade material. This allows us to offer very competitive export prices to our customers.
